The Jefferson District cross country championship had a familiar feel on Wednesday, as Western Albemarle’s boys and girls teams swept the meet.

McGrane’s prediction proved dead-on, as Goodloe weighed interest and offers from schools as wide-ranging as baseball power Florida State and Ivy League academic power Harvard. The senior found a perfect medium in his eventual choice, William and Mary.

For years, cross country fans have yearned for a “State Open Championship”, where Group A, AA, AAA and private schools come together in the same race to decide who truly is the best in Virginia. Anyone who was lucky enough to be out at Panorama Farms for the Albemarle Invitational on Saturday afternoon witnessed the next best thing.

In Harrisonburg, the Western Albemarle boys track team captured the Group AA track and field crown — in an unconventional way.

Tyler Stutzman lost one Jefferson District track record on Wednesday without even getting a chance to defend it. But he walked out of the meet with a new, different mark and a big-time scalp.
