Monticello (2-0 JD, 5-1) is in the driver’s seat in the Jefferson District, and following its thrilling 23-21 victory over Courtland, appears poised to make another postseason push.

In the first of two rounds in the Group AA championship, Mikey Moyers gave himself significant wiggle room with his score of 6-under 65.

“When I bogeyed those two holes I didn’t think I was going to qualify for states,” Mikey Moyers said. “So I was a little worried.”

“That felt good,” said Western coach Ed Pierce. “It’s a new scheme and you have to get the timing right and the quarterback has to put it where it needs to go.“

Gabe Kosowitz battled through footwork problems to pick up a three-set victory at No. 2 singles, clinching a 5-0 victory for the Warriors in the Group AA boys tennis team semifinals over Harrisonburg. Western will face Salem this morning at 9 a.m. the finals with the chance to win its second straight state title.

In Harrisonburg, the Western Albemarle boys track team captured the Group AA track and field crown — in an unconventional way.

The Warriors used a well-balanced attack to break to an early lead and the defense did the rest as they rolled to a 14-2 victory over Forest Park to earn a spot in the state semifinals next week.

Buoyed by a narrow defeat in a previous meeting, the Western Albemarle baseball team was full of confidence heading into Wednesday night’s matchup with defending Group AA champion Turner Ashby. It took all of five batters for that optimism to evaporate.

Nothing makes a baseball team happier than watching their pitcher throw a complete-game shutout.
