The Virginia men’s soccer team lost its first season opener in five years, dropping a close 1-0 decision to St. John’s on Friday night at Klockner Stadium.
The Red Storm scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 33rd minute when forward Adam Himeno snaked between two UVa defenders in the box for a loose ball and lofted a shot over the head of Cavalier goalie Dan Louisignau.
For the game, Virginia (0-1) outshot St. Johns 17-7 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Cavaliers could not capitalize on their chances as Red Storm goalie Neal Kitson had seven saves.
Virginia’s last season-opening loss came during the 2003 season to Seton Hall.
UVa, which is coming off a disappointing loss in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, will try and bounce back on Sunday when it hosts Southern Methodist at 8 p.m.
