The Virginia men’s tennis team hasn’t lost an outdoor home match since April of 2006 — a span of 25 matches. That loss came to Miami.
This afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center, top-ranked and undefeated UVa hosts the 26th-ranked Hurricanes (9-4, 2-2 ACC) in a match that begins at 3 p.m.
Then, on Sunday, Virginia (19-0, 5-0) hosts 10th-ranked Florida State (13-3, 4-1).
UVa coach Brian Boland is hoping for big crowds at both matches.
“It just makes all the difference for us,” Boland said. “One of the biggest reasons for our success is having the greatest fans in college tennis.
“We have the highest attendance in the country and we’re
hoping to build on that.”
So far this spring, Somdev Devvarman, Sanam Singh and Ted Angelinos have been huge for Boland. The threesome is undefeated in singles play.
Today, one of the most compelling matchups will be between Devvarman, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, and the Hurricanes’ Daniel Vallverdu, who is ranked fourth.
“He’s a great ball striker,” said Boland, referring to Vallverdu. “He has a big forehand. It should be a great college tennis match.”
Boland, as one would expect — considering his team is undefeated — loves where his team is at right now.
“We’re coming off a great weekend last weekend,” Boland said. “We continue to build confidence and momentum. We had an excellent week of practice and are looking forward to [this weekend].”
