In Newport News, Covenant’s three seniors went out on a high note on Saturday, claiming the school’s first state boys tennis championship with an 8-1 victory over Hampton Roads Academy in the VISAA Division II final.
“We were worried about a letdown, but the guys pushed as hard as they did in the semifinals and quarterfinals,” said Covenant coach Dave Dahnert. “There was no let-up.”
Eagles seniors Brad Tulenko and Chris Kochard won their singles matches over HRA’s Zach Braig and Harrison Suttle, respectively. Kochard and classmate Gray Delany defeated Suttle and Henry Arndt in doubles play.

In Goochland, Erin Hauser scored four goals to lead the Eagles past the Seahawks in the VISAA Division II final.
“It was a team effort,” said Covenant coach Pat Campbell. “Players have been stepping up in different positions all year long, and this is the culmination of that effort.”
Nikki Holzman and Amy Inouye also scored for the Eagles (20-1-1), who extended their shutout streak to seven games behind the efforts of sweeper Emily Klein and goalkeeper Martha Hay.
Virginia Hill had two assists for Covenant and Holzman, Klein and Hannah Klein each added one.
