In Manteo, N.C., Albemarle cross country coaches Buz Male and Lance Weisend were looking for a way to reward their runners for working hard in the summer.
This weekend, Male and Weisend took those who worked out in the summer to the Outer Banks Invitational. Both teams rewarded their coaches with first-place finishes, breaking a couple of records in the process.
Luke Noble won the boys 5K race and set a course record with a time of 15:52. The boys also broke the team record by scoring 23 points, one point ahead of the previous record.
Patriots senior Liz Barclay finished first in the girls race with a time of 19:41.
“We try and tell our kids all the time that they will be rewarded for their hard work,” Male said. “I think they understand why we’ve been preaching it so much. They’ve caught on.”
The Albemarle girls placed seven runners in the top ten, while the boys placed seven in the top 11.
