In Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Louisa County baseball team got off to a strong start in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic this week.
The Lions posted a 4-0 record through Thursday, recording wins over Buffalo (West Virginia), Charleston Catholic (West Virginia), Myrtle Beach and J.J. Kelly (Virginia). Louisa was scheduled to play Carolina Forest (South Carolina) on Friday night.
“I’m very pleased with how we’ve done,” said Louisa first-year coach Kevin Fisher. “We’ve been hitting the ball, and hopefully that will continue when we get back to Virginia.”
The Lions, making their third trip to Myrtle Beach, have combined to score over 50 runs this week, including nine home runs.
Dylan Szalankiewicz belted four homers, one of which was the game-winner against J.J. Kelly. He hit another two against Buffalo on Monday. Brothers Kenny and Kurt Fleming also joined the hit parade, as Kurt had a grand slam against Myrtle Beach on Wednesday and Kenny had two homers against the host team.
In addition, Louisa has gotten solid pitching from Gunnar Carroll, Josh Vipperman, Casey Harlow, Tyler Brookman and Kenny Fleming.
“We get to see different teams and most of them are well-coached,” Fisher said of the spring break trip. “It’s a good way for us to get ready for the district season.”
