The Virginia women’s soccer team is officially clicking on all cylinders.
UVa, behind a goal from long lost superstar Jess Rostedt, crushed N.C. State 6-0 in front of a crowd of 961 on a chilly Thursday night at Klockner Stadium.
The win was No. 11 Virginia’s third straight and its 14th consecutive over the Wolfpack (a streak that dates back to 1995).
“It was nice to see us put some balls away,” said UVa coach Steve Swanson, whose team travels to play Clemson on Sunday afternoon. “It had been a while since we’d done that. That was good to see.”
In the 39th minute, Virginia (9-1-1, 3-0-0) notched what turned out to be the game-winner when freshman Lauren Alwine dribbled methodically to her right and snuck a grounder past Rachel Barnette for her second career goal.
Just over two minutes later, Alwine threaded the needle to a streaking Rostedt. Making her first start of the season, Rostedt was able to flick the ball in the goal as she hurdled Barnette to give Virginia a 2-0 lead. The junior, recovering from a knee injury until just recently, hadn’t scored since a win over Delaware in the season opener last season.
“It felt really good, especially playing here in Klockner,” Rostedt said. [The goalie] came sliding out so I just jumped over her so she wouldn’t take out my ankles.”
Rostedt, who was appearing in just her third game of the season, says her knee is close to 100 percent. “It’s good to be back out there again,” she said. “Injuries are always hard.”
Less than three minutes into the second half, Meghan Lenczyk tacked on one of many insurance goals when she slammed home the rebound of Nikki Krzysik’s header. It was the sophomore’s ACC-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Cavalier scoring was rounded out by Caitlin Miskel, Kelly Quinn and Amanda Stewart. Quinn’s goal had to feel particularly sweet. Her older brother, Brady, the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, was in attendance.
Six different Cavaliers wound up scoring goals. In addition to her goal, Alwine finished with three assists to give her 10 for the season, tops in the conference.
Overall, Swanson was pleased.
“I thought we did some good things to get the ball in good position,” he said. “Our shot selection initially wasn’t great, but I think once Lauren got that goal it settled us down a little and we got better and better.”
