Western Albemarle was the lone Central Virginia squad to take the field Friday night during the state’s week zero, and it didn’t get started like the Warriors had planned.
Western ended a long trek to Liberty High in Bedford with a 33-0 loss. The Minutemen jumped out to an early lead and then took control with three monster plays in the second quarter — a 68-yard punt return for a score, a 39-yard touchdown pass and a 70-yard touchdown run.
Western’s running game struggled as the Warriors managed just 47 total yards on offense. Western’s two-quarterback rotation of Stephen Schuler and Seth Bowman tossed three interceptions and combined for 56 yards.
A number of other area squads kick off the season this Friday night, while Western continues its season by locking up with Waynesboro.
Look out for The Daily Progress’ three-day high school football preview package next week, beginning with a private school breakdown on Tuesday, a look at the non-Jefferson District public schools Wednesday and an in-depth preview of the Jefferson District in Thursday’s edition.
