MIDLOTHIAN — Amateur Roger Newsom has won the SunTrust State Open of Virginia.
Newsom won the title with a birdie on the fourth hole of a playoff with pro Chip Sullivan at Independence Golf Club on Sunday.
Former Virginia standout Cameron Yancey finished third with a four-day total of 279. Two Charlottesville residents, UVa men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent and Farmington Country Club professional Rob McNamara, tied for 11th at 285. Fellow Charlottesville golfer Jerry Burton shot a 286, while Palmyra’s Bryan Jackson finished at 287.
Newsom, a 44-year-old ophthalmologist, started the day with a two-shot lead over Sullivan, who shot a three-under-par 69 to force the playoff. Both ended regulation play with four-day scores of 275.
