After mural is rejected, city weighs art vs. history

A local arts enthusiast has set out to improve Charlottesville’s cityscape by creating two new murals per year. But this summer, he learned a sobering lesson: When the canvas is a historic building, government can be the ultimate art critic.

Ross McDermott, the director of the Charlottesville Mural Project, hoped to put up a mural — a brightly colored geometric design that evokes animals and nature — on the side of a building in the newly redeveloped 500 block of West Main Street.
