An 18-year-old man who was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train Friday night has died, police said Saturday.
Police say the victim was struck at about 9 p.m. on the tracks just before the trestle over Eighth Street Northwest.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts with the Charlottesville Police Department.
The New Jersey native was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
This is the second death to occur on local train tracks this week. On Monday night, 18-year-old Kimberly Welch was struck and killed on the Buckingham Branch Railroad tracks east of Charlottesville.
An unidentified person was struck and severely injured by a freight train in Charlottesville on Friday night, according to city police.
The train, which was traveling northbound, struck the person just before the trestle over Eighth Street Northwest, police said. The person was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
According to eyewitnesses, pedestrians frequent the tracks in this area, located between West Main Street and Preston Avenue.
