Celebrate spring in the city with the 65th annual Charlottesville Dogwood Festival.

The festival began as a way to focus on Charlottesville as a hub within the community of Central Virginia and a source of fun in the sun with talent shows, band and drill team demonstrations and carnival rides.

Among this year’s activities:

» The carnival rides will operate at McIntire Park from April 10-27. Hours are 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 1 to 11 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 to 8:30 p.m. Sundays. $20 armbands are good for Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (except April 10). Parking at Charlottesville High School; handicap parking at McIntire Park.

» Fireworks will light up the sky over McIntire Park at 9 p.m. April 11. A makeup rain date is set for the same time the following night.

» The Charlottesville Municipal Band will play in the V. Earl Dickinson Building at Piedmont Virginia Community College at 3:30 p.m. April 13. Admission is free.

» A Vietnam Memorial Rededication will be held at 11 a.m. April 25 at the memorial in McIntire Park.

» The Dogwood Festival Parade is set for 10:50 a.m. April 26. The parade begins at the intersection of McIntire and Preston, travels east on Market Street, turns left onto Seventh Street Northeast, then left onto High Street to travel west back to the starting point.

» The Dogwood Queen’s Ball will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight April 26 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Tickets are $20 per person or $200 for a table sponsor.

» The Dogwood Festival Track Classic kicks off at 8 a.m. May 3. The 50th anniversary of the meet will be held at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field. For more information, call the Ragged Mountain Shop at 293-3367.
