The Charlottesville Police Department will be getting body cameras that experts hope will provide valuable evidence to protect officers in the event of misconduct allegations.

VML Insurance Programs, a nonprofit provider of group self-insurance, purchased 1,400 Veho Movi micro body cameras for a handful of police departments around the state — all those with law enforcement liability coverage.

While dashboard cameras have been used for years to record what happens while officers are on patrol, the new body cameras can be worn on the uniform for hands-free audio and video recording.

In a Friday news release, VMLIP managing director Steve Craig said he hopes that the cameras will be helpful in protecting officers from false accusations of police brutality or misconduct.
