PRATTS – A 12-year-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon in the woods near his house in Madison County in what authorities, and the boy’s father, are calling an accidental shooting.
Dax Dixon of Pratts, a small community in Madison, died Saturday afternoon while playing with a neighbor friend, the boy’s father, Dan Dixon, said Sunday.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to what it described as an accidental shooting involving two juveniles shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, a news release said. Deputies found Dax Dixon dead at the scene, the release said.
The investigation is ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office would not comment further on Sunday.
Dan Dixon said he was at work at the time and did not know his son was at the neighbor’s house. He said his son had been staying with a relative over the weekend, and was unaware that the boy had been brought back to the neighborhood.
The younger Dixon played roller hockey and enjoyed biking and playing “Halo” and “Call of Duty” with his friends, his father said.
Dax Dixon and his friends had built a fort in the woods where he was killed, his father said.
“He had a good heart and he seemed to try to bring out the best in everybody that he met,” Dixon said. “He was a cheerful kid.”
Dixon said his son was fond of dub step music, particularly the artist Skrillex.
“He was a good kid and I loved him very much,” Dixon said. “We’re a tight-knit family; we have had people coming by all day.”
Counselors from Madison County schools and other divisions, as well as hospice personnel and a ministerial association will be available today at William Wetsel Middle School, which Dax Dixon attended, for students and staff, Matt Eberhardt, superintendent of Madison County schools, said in an email Sunday.
The schools have not planned a service, he said.
“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to the family following the tragedy,” Eberhardt said.
