U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Ivy, has been charged with improperly changing lanes in connection with a car accident Friday night in Nottoway County. Perriello’s campaign says the freshman Democrat hit a car in his pickup truck’s blind spot as he changed lanes.

One of the occupants of the other car was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but was not seriously injured, said Perriello spokeswoman Jessica Barba. "Nobody was hurt," she said. "Everybody was fine. That’s the important thing."

Perriello and GOP state Sen. Robert Hurt of Chatham are in the final days of their race for the 5th District seat in Congress currently held by Perriello. Election Day is Nov. 2.
