RGIII aims for a more normal existence in Year 3

ASHBURN - The Washington Redskins are just beginning their on-field training, but quarterback Robert Griffin III's slogan game is already in midseason form.

Griffin has introduced three slogans for this year's pre-camp training sessions, his latest appearing on the t-shirts that players wore during this week's practices. They read: "Win everything, win every day."

"That's the demeanor, to seize every day," Griffin said after Wednesday's practice.

Griffin's slogans and advertising had been one of his main avenues to speak to the public in his first two years, but as year three begins, he's aiming for a more normal existence at Redskins Park.

"We've got a new coach, we've got new additions," he said. "The storylines don't all lead back to me, and that's fine. It's all about us."

He's hoping a coaching change will further enhance his ability to blend in.

Former coach Mike Shanahan restricted Griffin to one press conference each week during practices. A team assistant timed it, to make sure Griffin didn't speak for more than 10 minutes.

Reporters would often make casual conversation with Griffin in the locker room, but any football talk was shut down immediately.

Gruden will place no such restrictions on the quarterback.

"He's mature beyond his years already," Gruden said. "He's obviously got a lot more (on-field) maturing to do, but as far as his work ethic is concerned, about how he handles himself on and off the field, I don't think that's going to be that big of an issue."

The new coach said he's interested only in working with Griffin as a passer, and has complimented Griffin's offseason work ethic.

When asked, he said having former Redskins quarterback Doug Williams around should assist Griffin's development as well.

"(Griffin is) a perfectionist," Gruden said. "He doesn't like negative publicity. He doesn't like negative plays to happen. He wants everything to be right. He wants everybody to love Robert, and that's not going to be the case at the quarterback position.

"So having a guy like Doug who has been through (being an NFL quarterback), and guys on staff that have been throw it, will be beneficial to him in his growing process."

Griffin's on-field mechanics have been noticeably sharper during the practices that have been open to reporters.

Without a brace on his surgically-repaired right knee, he's been able to move better and plant before throwing. Griffin is also working on having a tighter base, meaning there is less distance between his legs when he throws, which produces more power.

The results have been mostly strong, though his accuracy has been hit or miss. Griffin's accuracy has never been a strong suit in practices, though. In 2012, as he was leading the Redskins to a playoff berth, he routinely was off on practice throws.

Griffin's abilities will become clearer when training camp begins on July 24 and he throws on a daily basis.

Until then, he's making as much news for his slogans as he is for his passes.

In addition to "Win everything, win every day," he has been encouraging fans to "Know your why" in an Adidas marketing campaign.

Earlier in the offseason, he branded the team's strength and conditioning workouts as "The Movement."

Those campaigns will make it tough for Griffin to fully blend in at Redskins Park, but he said he'll work to share some of his spotlight with teammates this season.
