WAYNESBORO — A 13-year-old Henrico County girl died Sunday night after falling from a cliff near the Humpback Rocks picnic area on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Henrico school officials identified her as Alexandra Babaeva, an eighth-grade student at Pocahontas Middle School.

Kurt Speers, the Ridge District ranger for the parkway, said the girl and her family walked to the Greenwood Overlook near mile marker 9 in Augusta County shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday.

Alexandra went below the overlook to an area not designated as a trail, Speers said. She then fell 45 to 50 feet onto the parkway.

She was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she later died.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch contributed to this report.
