Richmond Flying Squirrels catcher Tommy Joseph was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies organization on Tuesday, part of the deal that made outfielder Hunter Pence a San Francisco Giant an hour or two before the 4 p.m. major-league trade deadline.
The Giants also gave up big-league outfielder Nate Schierholtz and Class A pitcher Seth Rosin.
Joseph, who turned 21 on July 16, was batting .260 with 8 HRs and 38 RBI for Richmond in his rookie Double-A season. Baseball America ranked Joseph as the Giants’ No. 2 prospect, behind Richmond outfielder Gary Brown, before this season.
Joseph represented the Giants in the Futures Game, a showcase for the best talent in the minor leagues, in Kansas City earlier this month.
