University of Virginia officials have confirmed that one student has contracted what doctors believe is mumps.

College students from other Virginia colleges have been diagnosed with mumps, which suggests more cases could be found at UVa, university student health director Dr. James C. Turner wrote in an email to students.

The message also reminded students to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly, avoid sharing drinking and eating utensils, cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze and call student health if they develop mumps-like symptoms.

Serious complications from the virus — which causes fever, headache, muscle aches, and swelling and tenderness of the glands close to the jaw — are rare, Turner wrote to students.
