Aiming to offer slowly smoked, flavorful meat and live music, Chauncey’s Smokehouse and Bar plans to open its doors on July 1.

Owned by married couple Mike and Silver Chauncey of Staunton, the eatery is located at 2323 W. Main St. in Waynesboro, in the buildings that housed Capt’n Sam’s Landing for so many years.

Chauncey’s will offer mainly smoked pork barbecue with an array of sauces. The restaurant also will sell chicken, brisket, coleslaw, baked beans and more. The two types of barbecue served will be Carolina and Memphis styles.

"We go to Richmond when we want good barbecue,” said co-owner Mike Chauncey. “There is no good barbecue to eat around here.”

The family feels the area is craving a barbecue spot to rival some of the top ones in the state. They plan to buy their ingredients locally.

"It is in demand," Silver Chauncey said. “People love barbecue.”

One of the big draws to the restaurant, the owners believe, will be the live music, which they plan to have five times a week on a stage that is being built inside the nearly 55,000-square-foot building.

Tuesdays will feature bluegrass. Wednesday will feature The Allstars, where Mike Chauncey is the drummer, alongside a guitarist and bassist. The Allstars will have a different singer each Wednesday and will play a variety of music genres. Thursdays will host young artists and Friday and Saturdays will see local and touring bands rock out.

The owners are currently trying to decide if they will be open on Sundays and Mondays.

So far, the project is 70 percent completed, according to the owners.

On the economic development side, 15 jobs will be added. The family praised the city for being accommodating to their food adventure. The restaurant has also added two handicap-accessible entries.

"We are delighted that Waynesboro residents and visitors will have another new dining and entertainment venue,” said Greg Hitchin, Waynesboro’s economic development director.

Should the county approve bonds in order to build the new Riverheads Elementary?

A new Riverheads Elementary was the top priority in the recently released ten year plan for Augusta County Schools. Plans have been created, but in order to start construction, the county supervisors have to sign off on the debt associated with the new school. A vote on the bonds will take place Wednesday.
