Jacob Hunter Wonderley, a native of Staunton, was killed in a one-car accident early Sunday morning on Route 778 in Staunton.
At 12:41 a.m., Wonderley, who was the passenger in a 1983 Pontiac Firebird, died at the scene when the vehicle he was riding in crashed off the road, according to Virginia State Police.
The driver, 23-year-old David Valentine, was transported to Augusta Health then to the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Michael Rossetti, a sergeant with the Virginia State Police in Staunton, said the driver has serious injuries.
Route 778 is located four miles east of Route 608.
Both Wonderley and Valentine were not wearing a seat belt in the crash, which saw the vehicle traveling estimated 70 miles-per-hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone.
"The vehicle ran off the road to the right, over corrected, went off the road to the left and overturned several times," Rossetti said.
Charges are pending and the accident is still under investigation.
