Updated 10:10 pm: Apriil Riddle, 38, and Jessie Balin, 23, both of Waynesboro, were charged with the manufacture of methamphetamine. They were being held in Middle River Regional Jail Tuesday night, according to Waynesboro police.
Original story: The Virginia State Police and the Waynesboro Police Department SWAT team raided a suspected meth lab on Sherwood Avenue for several hours Tuesday afternoon.
Five people were detained and taken into custody by police. Three were later released, said Waynesboro Police Sgt. Brian Edwards.
Edwards said the state police and city police came to 682 Sherwood Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. An air monitor belonging to the state police and used by the Waynesboro police signaled the presence of hazardous material inside the house. He said the monitor did not register in all portions of the brick house.
Material seized from the house was to go to a state lab in Roanoke for testing.
A decontamination tent was set up in front of the suspected house. Capt. Andrew Holloway of the Waynesboro Fire Department said emergency personnel and those being detained had their clothing removed. They were then hosed down by fire personnel to remove any material they may have been exposed to inside the house.
Waynesboro police have raided two previous meth labs in the city this year, according to Edwards.
