Allison Sprouse is not afraid to become the characters of literature she teaches her English students at Stuarts Draft High.

Sprouse dressed and became Scout Finch when her students were reading "To Kill a Mockingbird'' and Flipper when the class was reading "The Great Gatsby."

"I love my job,'' said Sprouse, who on Friday was named Augusta County's 2014 Teacher of the Year during a program at Waynesboro's Best Western Inn & Suites Conference Center.

Sprouse is a graduate of George Mason University and the holder of a master's in teaching from Mary Baldwin College. She said Friday's selection reinforces "what I've been doing."

Stuarts Draft High Principal Donna Abernathy said Sprouse's technique helps her sell her classes on the stories they are reading. "She is amazing in the classroom. She is as excited about teaching in May as she is in August,'' Abernathy said.

Sprouse was also the teacher of the year at Stuarts Draft High. She and the respective teachers of the year from the county's schools, Valley Vocational-Technical Center and the Shenandoah Valley Governor's School, were also in attendance Friday.

Other teachers of the year honored Friday include:

Sarah Stoll, teacher, Beverley Manor Elementary.

Marshelle Moore, band teacher, Beverley Manor Middle.

Elizabeth Click, history teacher, Buffalo Gap High.

Amy Fitzgerald, first-grade teacher, Cassell Elementary.

Becky Resser, teacher, Clymore Elementary.

Online poll

Should the county approve bonds in order to build the new Riverheads Elementary?

A new Riverheads Elementary was the top priority in the recently released ten year plan for Augusta County Schools. Plans have been created, but in order to start construction, the county supervisors have to sign off on the debt associated with the new school. A vote on the bonds will take place Wednesday.
