The Waynesboro YMCA played host recently to somewhat of an unusual ceremony. A father and daughter both earned their black belt status at the same time. Samantha Cohen and Brian Cohen were promoted to Shodan, or the first degree black belt, after five years of study at the Waynesboro Chikubu-Kai dojo.
“It has been a great joy being Brian and Samantha’s sensei (teacher),” instructor Tony Cooper said. “I look forward to seeing their progression for years to come. Their new journey has just begun.”
The word Shodan is used for the first degree black belt title because the character used to represent it in Japanese also means first or beginning.
The dojo is located at the Waynesboro Family YMCA, 648 South Wayne Avenue.
