Grant funding from the group American Rivers allowed the City of Waynesboro this week to start work on restoring portions of its riverfront parks. The goal, city officials say, is to develop and rebuild the South River, so it can be a part of Waynesboro’s long term plans.
“In 2010, we talked about embracing the river,” Waynesboro Planning Director Michael Barnes said. “Part of embracing the river is using it and using it means we need to increase the water quality and possible habitats, to support trout and other forms of fishing. That increases tourism and economic development.”
