Grant funding from the group American Rivers allowed the City of Waynesboro this week to start work on restoring portions of its riverfront parks. The goal, city officials say, is to develop and rebuild the South River, so it can be a part of Waynesboro’s long term plans.

“In 2010, we talked about embracing the river,” Waynesboro Planning Director Michael Barnes said. “Part of embracing the river is using it and using it means we need to increase the water quality and possible habitats, to support trout and other forms of fishing. That increases tourism and economic development.”

After 15 years in Waynesboro, the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival will move in 2016 to Meadows Events Park outside of Richmond, citing a lack of space to expand, among other things.
