Several local athletes were honored for their college play on Monday, as conferences gave out weekly awards.
Former Stuarts Draft standout Mayzie Lewis was named the USA South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. The freshman at Mary Baldwin College scored three goals, her first career hat trick, in a 4-1 season opening victory over Wilson College. Lewis scored the team’s final three goals in the match.
Former Robert. E. Lee football star Dae’Quan Scott also took home honors for his play in James Madison’s season opening victory against Central Connecticut. The senior running back was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Special Teams Player of the Week after collecting 197 all-purpose yards in the game. Scott took a punt return 54 yards for a touchdown, marking just the 15th time that a Dukes player has done that in Bridgeforth Stadium history. Scott also added 15 carries for 120 yards and caught a pass for 14 yards in the 38-14 win.
Scott’s teammate, redshirt freshman Taylor Reynolds also collected an award from the Dukes’ season opening victory, being named Rookie of the Week. Playing his first game on the defensive side of the ball after switching from quarterback to cornerback in the spring, Reynolds recorded six tackles along with an interception that he returned 51 yards for a touchdown. That marked the first time since the 2011 season that a Dukes player returned an interception for a touchdown.
