Local teams prepare for football playoffs

The first round of Virginia high school football playoffs will feature a rematch of one of the regular season's most exciting games.

Charlottesville (4-6) and Western Albemarle (9-1) will meet in the first round of the Group AA, Division 3, Region II playoffs, the VHSL announced on Sunday. Kickoff dates and times have not yet been announced. The Warriors edged the Black Knights 50-49 during the regular season. Both teams ended their regular seasons with a loss. Western fell 32-29 to Louisa at home, while the Black Knights dropped a 30-27 road game at Powhatan.

Monticello (8-2) joins their Jefferson District rivals in the Region II playoffs. The third-seeded Mustangs will host Fauquier (7-3).

Two of Central Virginia's Group A teams, Madison County (5-5) and Buckingham County (8-2), earned spots in the Division 3, Eastern Sectional playoffs. The Mountaineers will travel to King William (9-1), while the Knights will host Clarke County (6-4). 

Fork Union Military Academy and Blue Ridge have their sights set on a state championship in the private school ranks. Both teams open the postseason with teams they faced during the regular season.

The Blue Devils (9-2) will take on Benedectine (7-3) on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Fluvanna County High School in the first round of the VISAA Division I playoffs. Fork Union edged the Cadets 39-30 during the regular season. The Barons (7-2) will host Christchurch (7-3) on Saturday in VISAA Division II playoffs. The Seahorses topped the Barons 19-7 during the regular season.
