GOOCHLAND — New year, new head coach, same result for the Covenant boys tennis team. The Eagles completed a dominating run through the VISAA Division 2 playoffs with a 6-0 victory over Steward in the state championship match on Saturday.
It was the fifth straight state championship for Covenant, which finished the season at 20-2 in Drake Diamond’s first season as the team’s head coach.
“It was a real blessing coaching the team. My job is fairly easy because I have phenomenal players,” Diamond said. “We also have great parents that are flexible and pragmatic. It also helps to have very capable assistant coaches that work with the players.”
That combination helped Covenant go through the state tournament without losing a single individual match. Jack Thomas earned a 10-4 win at No. 1; Sam Adamson (No. 2) and Kevin Coleman (No. 5) each posted 10-3 victories; William Rose won the No. 3 singles match 10-5; Matthew Rose did not lose a game and won 10-0 at No. 4 and Will Thomas won 10-2 at No. 6.
