Recent heavy rains transformed the usually bone-dry Hardy National speedway into three miles of mud and muck on Saturday, as the 14th running of the Fork Union Invitational featured hot temperatures and sloppy conditions. For the second straight week, it was an Albemarle sweep as both Patriot squads brought home team titles to add to their Ragged Mountain Cup victories. On the boys’ side, the No. 1-ranked team in Virginia eked out a four-point victory despite the absence of Chris Springer, one of their top runners who was taking the ACTs. The Albemarle girls enjoyed a much more dominating win. Their 50-point margin was fueled by individual runner-up Allison Huschke. Both Patriot teams will face some national-class competition at this weekend’s Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg, while all of the local private schools will preview their state meet course at the Woodberry Forest Invitational on Saturday.
