I love seeing runners giving back to the sport and there is no better place to witness this than at a high school cross country meet when you see so many former prep competitors sharing their passion for the sport as adult coaches.
As the fall marathon season gets underway, I can think of no other better advice I can give to my athletes than to be patient on race day!
With just a few days to go until our area’s largest footrace, I thought our Women’s Four Miler participants might appreciate a few tips for the road.
Here’s what makes me a happy runner.
What innocently started as a way to lose weight through a beginner running program has, a dozen years later, led one time couch cruiser turned running enthusiast Glen Anderson to the finish line of his 100th marathon. If someone had told Glen back in 2002 that he would not only complete one marathon but would eventually go on to finish 99 others, including a sub-four hour marathon in all 50 states, he would have probably called you crazy!
Just like re-setting our clocks for daylight savings, we need to pay close attention to Mother Nature’s cues and, for us, it’s the oppressive heat and humidity that forces us to slow things down.
Cynthia, Annie and I just arrived home from a wonderful holiday trip to California and, while away, I was once again reminded of how much more of the world you can see when you’re out and about running.
Early this Saturday morning, just before sun rise at about 5 a.m., thousands of women all over Central Virginia will be logging on to their computers and phones to get in line to register for our area's most popular foot race, The Charlottesville a Women's Four Miler. If the registration goes like it has over the past few summers, entries will reach the 3,500 limit before noon on Saturday, just a few brief hours after the process began!

Dougs Maytag Home Appliance Center started out as Doug’s Appliance Repair in February of 1991. Douglas and Kelly Golder began running the company out of their home and garage, where it remained for 3 years. As the company started growing, they rented a store front in the town of Scottsville, Virginia where they continued to provide excellent appliance repair service to their customers. In, 1996 they ventured out and took advantage of an opportunity to join the Maytag Company. They now have a bigger showroom and office to better serve their customers. At this point the business name changed to Doug’s Maytag Home Appliance Center. This allowed them to sell Maytag products and still be able to maintain the repair side of the business. In 2006, Maytag was sold to the Whirlpool Corporation. With this merger , Doug’s Maytag, added Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, and Amana to the Maytag brand giving more versatility and choices to their customers. Doug’s Maytag, understands the different customer demands and needs in purchasing appliances, weather for a new construction or for upgrades to an existing home, and can advise the customer on their purchase. Doug’s Maytag offers financing and leasing programs which allows the customer flexibility with their purchaseThey have partnered with Brand source, which has helped to build the business in many different aspects. Doug’s Maytag is a sponsor of The Ronald McDonald House, Susan G. Komen, John Force Racing and Trees for the Future.
