The downtown sweet shop visited by a president four years ago continues to lead sales of a deluxe Belgian chocolate.
The Frenchman's Corner on East Davis Street in Culpeper announced this week its designation - four years running - as the No. 1 independent retailer of Neuhaus Chocolates for 2012. Marc and Meg Ast own three Frenchman's establishments, including shops in Fredericksburg and Charlottesville. They plan to open a fourth selling chocolates, tea and coffee on the Downtown Mall in C'ville next year, according to a release.
As for the distinction of selling the most Neuhaus chocolates last year among independent retailers worldwide, The Frenchman's Corner will receive an award for that in June at Neuhaus headquarters in Vlezenbeek, Belgium.
"We wish to thank our customer service teams as well as our customers for continuing to allow us to be your No. 1 provider of Neuhaus Belgian chocolates in the Piedmont region and beyond," Ast said.
He and his wife started their business in 2001 in the entrance hall of Hazel River Inn Restaurant on East Davis Street with a few temperature-controlled cases of chocolates.
In 2008, President Bill Clinton dropped by Frenchman's Corner in Culpeper on the campaign trail for his wife.
Neuhaus is a world famous manufacturer of luxury Belgian chocolates and biscuits, according to the company web site. Jean Neuhaus, a Swiss immigrant, founded the company in Brussels in 1857.
