Just when Ralph Brown thought he was done with the jewelry business, it pulled him back in.
The Culpeper icon, who has been repairing jewelry, watches and selling jewelry for more than 40 years opens a new business – J & R Jewelers – with his daughter Juanita Sullivan this week.
J & R Jewelers hosts its grand opening on Wednesday at 707 Dominion Square Shopping Center.
Brown retired from the business in 2007, but stayed active as Sullivan operated another store and Brown helped out a few days a week. But the two missed owning their own establishment and the customers, so now he’s back…again.
Brown has worked in Culpeper for more than 40 years, working first for Levy Jewelers before owning his own shop in several different locations in town.
His daughter has been at his side for more than 20 years, and now she’s ready to help the community with her level of expertise as well.
“The people, they know us and we know them,” Sullivan said. “We know what they like. They’re good to us and we’re good to them.”
While the customers and their needs haven’t changed, the business has.
“When I first learned to do it, we were working with torches,” Sullivan said. “Then my dad got a laser machine. We have certificates for that. We do have a laser store here at this store as well.”
Interacting with the public has also changed as the business is using mobile technology to interact with customers. Customers can text whollymobijandr to 368266. There is also an app for Smartphones.
The store does custom design on jewelry, fashion jewelry, watch repair, engraving and all jewelry repairs.
The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
