Thirty years ago Friday, a Front Royal police sergeant was shot and killed outside his home in the Shenandoah Valley town.
The unsolved homicide of 28-year-old Dennis Smedley remains an active priority for the Virginia State Police and Town of Front Royal PD, according to a news release Thursday. His tragic passing on Sept. 20, 1983 remains the department's only line-of-duty death.
Dressed in his uniform, Sgt. Smedley had just left his apartment in the town of Front Royal when as he was getting into his vehicle an unknown person shot him in the back several times.
"We know someone in the Front Royal community can help us identify this individual, ultimately bringing closure to the Smedley family after 30 long years of suffering," said VSP Special Agent J.A. Defilippi with the bureau of criminal investigations Culpeper Field Office. "We hope anyone with information about this case who may have been reluctant to come forward in the past will come forward now and tell us what they know."
Through the years, two individuals were charged in Smedley's death, but both were acquitted.
Anyone with information on the cold case should call Defilippi at (540) 829-7400 or 1-888-300-0156 or by email at email@example.com.
