Whereas, Americans are served every single day by public servants at the federal, state, county, town and city levels. These unsung heroes do the work that keeps our nation working; and
Whereas, teachers are the backbone of the Culpeper County Public School System, working daily to open the world to our students; and
If you have been in Culpeper any length of time, there is a very high probability that you have been to the park in the center of town, Yowell Meadow Park. This park has been a beloved place for relaxation and exercise, family events, sporting events and the big July 4th celebration. Unfortunately, it is also a well-known flooding area.
If there is one thing Culpeper is known for, it’s our sense of community — we proved that during the first two Give Local Piedmont events when we raised nearly $1.4 million, which benefitted our region’s nonprofits. We know our residents will step up again on May 3 to give generously to community causes that touch their hearts.
As members of the congregation of the Islamic Center of Culpeper, we are deeply saddened that our request for a permit for a pump and haul septic system has given birth to controversy and division.
Even if the decision by Culpeper officials to reject the mosque-associated permit was religiously motivated, they acted consistently with their federal and state constitutions.
It requires a leap of faith to consider the board of supervisors’ recent denial of a pump and haul (p & h) permit to be religious discrimination. Everyone, no matter their religious affiliation, should respect health and safety regulations.
Thank you to Mr. Chase, Mr. Deal, Mr. Walker and Mr. Frazier for your recent decision to deny the pump and haul application from the Islamic Center of Culpeper.
