The Virginia men’s basketball team will participate in the 2019 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament and host two games.
In matchups that were announced Wednesday, the Cavaliers will welcome Columbia to John Paul Jones Arena on Nov. 16 and Vermont on Nov. 19. Coach Tony Bennett’s team will then play UMass on Nov. 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Virginia is in the Naismith bracket, which also includes Arizona State, St. John’s and UMass. The championship game for that bracket will be held Nov. 24 at the Mohegan Sun Arena and pit the winner of the Virginia-UMass game against the Arizona State-St. John’s winner.
“We are looking forward to the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in November,” Bennett said in a release. “The competitive field will provide quality competition for our team.”
UVa hopes to continue its recent run of November success. The Cavaliers have won six consecutive Thanksgiving holiday tournaments (2018 Battle 4 Atlantis, 2017 NIT Season Tip-Off, 2016 Emerald Coast Classic, 2015 Charleston Classic, 2014 Barclays Center Classic and 2013 Corpus Christi Challenge).
The Cavaliers open the 2019-20 campaign at Syracuse on Nov. 6. It’ll be the team's first live action since UVa beat Texas Tech, 85-77, in overtime to claim the NCAA Tournament championship on April 8.
The Wahoos will playing 20 conference games this season, facing Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena and Georgia Tech, Louisville, Boston College, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest on the road.
Virginia will be without its top three scorers from last season; guards Kyle Guy, De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome have all declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.
