Jason Bennett is the new athletic director at Covenant, the school announced on Thursday.
Bennett has been the director of athletics and student activities at Chapelgate Christian Academy outside Baltimore for the past 20 years. He replaces Clark Walker, who recently stepped down as the Eagles’ athletic director but will remain at the school as the varsity boys basketball coach.
“I am truly excited for the opportunity to serve The Covenant School in the capacity of Director of Athletics,” Bennett said in a release announcing his hire. “I have sensed God’s calling to this school and am confident He is going before me.”
Prior to his time at Chapelgate, Bennett taught physical education and was the Assistant Athletic Director at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Maryland. He also coached a number of different sports throughout his time at both schools.
Bennett earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Houghton College, where he also played soccer, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the College of St. Rose.
“We are very excited about Mr. Bennett’s ability and passion to further develop a culture of excellence in our athletics program,” said Colin Anderson, who is the Head of Upper School at Covenant. “His background in athletics, along with his winsome personality and genuine commitment to Christ, make him a perfect fit for Covenant athletics.”
Bennett will be formally introduced at a press conference at The Covenant School’s Hickory Campus on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Bennett will be taking over a Covenant athletic program that had a successful 2018-19 athletic year that saw the Eagles win state championships in 8-man football and wrestling.
“The Covenant School has a strong history of accomplishments in athletics, and I will work hard to provide opportunities for our athletes to continue in this regard while remembering that our abilities in athletics can be used for His glory,” Bennett said. “I look forward to meeting coaches, faculty, students and their families over the next few months.”
