The Western Albemarle girls tennis team advanced to the VHSL Class 3 state championship game with a convincing 5-0 win over Abingdon on Tuesday in the semifinals. The Warriors picked up five singles wins to end the match before doubles play.
Austin Winslow rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2, Stephanie Hass earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 3, Sarah Inman nabbed a 6-1,6-3 win at No. 4, Sarah Warren picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 and Jenny Little scored a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 6. Corinne Jennings’ match at No. 1 singles was in the third set when Western clinched the match.
“So proud of our team today,” Western Albemarle coach Ellen Markowitz said. “Everyone played their best and were so tough out there.”
The Warriors will face James Monroe for the state championship on Saturday in Salem.
Western makes final
The Western Albemarle boys tennis team will play for a third straight state championship on Saturday after cruising to a 5-0 win over Hidden Valley on Tuesday in the VHSL Class 3 state semifinals.
The Warriors picked up five straight-set wins to advance. Gavin Segraves defeated Ravi Dayaraman 6-0, 6-0, Alex Ix downed Gavin Pyle 6-0, 6-2, Tobin Yates dispatched Jacob Nichols 6-2, 6-1, Jake Selverstone topped Jake Facciani 6-1, 6-3 and Simon Rader beat Brendan Firucane 6-3, 6-1.
The Warriors will face James Monroe in the state championship match on Saturday in Salem.
Fluvanna reaches semis
Andrew Ward pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Fluvanna County baseball team to a 1-0 win over Abingdon in the Class 3 state quarterfinals. Cameron Shields drove in the game’s lone run with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Flucos will face Brentsville in the Class 3 state semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. at Kiwanis Field in Salem.
Madison County cruises
The Madison County softball team scored four runs in the top of the second inning and cruised from there in a 10-0 victory over Amelia in the Class 2 state quarterfinals. The Mountaineers will face Lebanon in the Class 2 state semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m. at Radford University.
William Monroe wins thriller
The William Monroe girls soccer team advanced to the Class 3 state semifinals with a thrilling road win over York. The teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime, sending the game to penalty kicks. After trading goals and stops through a tense first session, the Greene Dragons prevailed 7-6 in the penalty kick shootout to advance. William Monroe will face Western Albemarle in the Class 3 state semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. in Salem.
CHS girls fall
The Charlottesville girls soccer team’s season ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Loudoun County in the Class 4 state quarterfinals. The Raiders scored a goal in the game’s final moments to break a 1-1 tie and advance to the state semifinals. Kaitlyn Lehnert scored the Black Knights’ lone goal.
