Western Albemarle vs. William Monroe

» What: VHSL Class 3 girls soccer state semifinals

» When: 1 p.m. Friday

» Where: Salem High School

» The skinny: Western Albemarle (17-2) returns to Salem looking for its third straight state championship. Region 3C Player of the Year Katrine Berg, Julia Berg, Ellie Cox, Kate DeJong, Cordelia O’Connell and Ellie Plantz anchor a veteran club that has thrived in high-profile games. William Monroe (14-4-2) is one of the feel-good stories of the state tournament. The Greene Dragons made the most of their first state tournament appearance with a big road win at Tabb in penalty kicks in the state quarterfinals. Sydney Dombrovskis, the team’s leading goal scorer, Anna Baker and Stacey Calderon-Castillo were first-team all-region performers for William Monroe.
