Fly an American Flag in memory of those who gave all in serving our country or in honor of those who serve and have served in our military. Flags will be displayed surrounding the Memorial statue in front of the American Legion Post 128 building and fly on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day. The cost to fly a flag on all three dates is $25. Proceeds will support gifts for Veterans living at the VA center. American Legion Post 128 conducts raffle ticket sales on several Saturdays at Walmart in Ruckersville. The group is raffling off money as prizes. The winner will be announced at the Greene County Courthouse at the end of the 4th of July parade. Sale dates are May 11, May 18, June 8, June 22 and June 29.

Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department will host an all-you-caneat breakfast on Sunday, May 12 from 8-11:30 a.m. Adults are $9, children ages 5-12 are $5 and children 4 and under eat for free.

May 15

Greene County School Board will hold its regular meeting and adopt the fiscal year 2020 budget on Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at Nathanael Greene Elementary School at 8094 Spotswood Trail, Stanardsville.

May 17

Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department will host two bands on May 17 from 7-10 p.m. Tony Meadows & Friends will play from 7-8:30 p.m. Precious Memories will play from 8:30-10 p.m. Call (434) 985-7030. 


Grace Health and Rehab, in partnership with The American Heart Association, celebrate National Live More/Move More Month with “Music in the Air” Friday, May 17. The event will run from 5-8 p.m. Bring blankets, lawn chair and dancing shoes and enjoy the hits from the late 50s through the 70s brought to you by the South Canal Street Band. Greene County Democrats invite the public to a potluck dinner on Sunday, May 19, from 5-7 p.m. to discuss initiatives for 2019 at the Grace Episcopal Church Hall in Stanardsville. The Greene County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Sunday, May 19 at 4 p.m. Ruth Walkup will present a program on the Confederate Cemetery in Stanardsville. Garrett Ensor will give a brief report on his Eagle Scout project concerning Historic Stanardsville. Refreshments provided. All are welcome. May 21

The Greene County Lions Club will meet Tuesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Ridge Café in Ruckersville. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Greene Lions Club community projects can come as a guest to the meeting. Lions in Greene and Lions International have programs to help those in need with glasses and hearing aids as well as local programs such as regular Blood Drives and screening of youngsters for vision problems. May 25

American Legion Post 128 invites the Greene County community to join them on Memorial Day weekend to place American Flags on the graves of each veteran within the county. The group will provide a free American Flag to all families who have family graveyards on their property or small church cemeteries that have a Veteran buried there. The group will exchange the flag for a picture of the grave marker, the information from the grave marker and location of the graveyard/cemetery. Exchanges will occur on May 25 at the American Legion Post building starting at 9:30 a.m. The building is located at 636 Madison Road, Stanardsville.

May 27

On Monday, May 27, American Legion Post 128 will conduct its annual “Walk of Honor” Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Post building.

June 4

Greene County Social Services will hold a cooling assistance event on June 4 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Applications will be available for the cooling program and Medicaid expansion. Staff will be available for questions and to help with applications. Refreshments and giveaways available while supplies last. Greene County Sheriff’s office will also be on site doing finger print cards for kids. Greene County Social Services is located at 10009 Spotswood Trail, Stanardsville. The Greene County Singers are looking for an accomplished pianist for their group for the fall rehearsals and concerts. The group practices on Thursday evenings from September-November and holds concerts the first two Sundays in December.
