The William Monroe High School Decades Reunion Committee will meet from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 at the Greene County Library. Celebrate the Earth with the Team Sierra Earth Day 5k run and 2 mile walk on Saturday, May 4. The race will be held at Hoover Ridge Park in Madison at 8 a.m. Cost is $30 for adults and $20 for children. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Sierra Club, an environmental organization dedicated to protecting the planet. Hope’s Legacy is holding their second annual “Hoofin’ It for Horses” 5k trail run and open house at Castle Rock Farm on Sunday, May 5. 5k trail run begins at 8 a.m. with the open house running from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Castle Rock Farm is located at 2080 Castle Rock Road in Afton.
Local charities are sponsoring the fourth annual “Seas the Day” for veterans on from noon-4 p.m., Sunday May 5 at the Thomas Temple Allan Boathouse, 276 Woodlands Road, Charlottesville. Families and friends of veterans are welcome, and it’s free. There will be games for children and tables with information from organizations that help veterans. There will be spin and fly fishing instruction, and those with a valid license may bring fishing gear and cast a line. The event will include a free lunch provided by Mission BBQ and live music provided by the Jive Cowboys. Guests will also hear from Ben Shaw, a Marine veteran who is now the director, Central Region, Virginia Veteran and Family Support. The Greene County Lions Club meets Tuesdays, May 7 and 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Ridge Café in Ruckersville. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Greene Lions Club community projects can come as a guest to the meeting. Lions in Greene and Lions International have programs to help those in need with glasses and hearing aids as well as local programs such as regular Blood Drives and screening of youngsters for vision problems. Fly an American Flag in memory of those who gave all in serving our country or in honor of those who serve and have served in our military. Flags will be displayed surrounding the Memorial statue in front of the American Legion Post 128 building and fly on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day. The cost to fly a flag on all three dates is $25. Proceeds will support gifts for Veterans living at the VA center. American Legion Post 128 invites the Greene County community to join them on Memorial Day weekend to place American Flags on the graves of each veteran within the county. The group will provide a free American Flag to all families who have family graveyards on their property or small church cemeteries that have a Veteran buried there. The group will exchange the flag for a picture of the grave marker, the information from the grave marker and location of the graveyard/cemetery. Exchanges will occur on May 25 at the American Legion Post building starting at 9:30 a.m. The building is located at 636 Madison Road, Stanardsville.
On Monday, May 27, American Legion Post 128 will conduct its annual “Walk of Honor” Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Post building.
