The Greene County Historical Society will host the Virginia World War I and World War II Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour on Saturday, April 6 in courthouse square. This traveling exhibit highlights stories of Virginians who served in both conflicts. As part of the tour, visitors are invited to bring their own WWI and WWII-related photographs to be scanned for inclusion in the Virginia Profiles of Honor project. Join Old Rag and other Master Naturalists and Montpelier’s Curator of Horticulture, Allyson Whalley, for the first seasonal forest stroll though the landmark forest on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Woman’s Club of Greene’s “Not Your Ordinary Yard Sale” will be held on April 6 from 7 a.m.–3 p.m. inside Shepherd of the Hills Church, 6562 Amicus Road in Ruckersville. Proceeds to benefit the clubs Christmas project. Donations will be accepted at the church April 2-5 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

On Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. the Madison-Greene Humane Society will be having a grand opening of its new Kitty Cottage. This dedication is open to the public. The Kitty Cottage is a small building erected at the site of the Humane Society and is the result of a community effort of donated labor and services. The cottage will be used as an isolation room for sick cats and kittens to help prevent the spread of diseases to other shelter cats.

American Legion Post 128 conducts raffle ticket sales on several Saturdays for the next few months at Walmart in Ruckersville. The group is raffling off money as prizes. The winner will be announced at the Greene County Courthouse at the end of the 4th of July parade. Sale dates are April 6, April 13, April 27, May 11, May 18, June 8, June 22 and June 29.

April 6-7

The Greene County Chamber of Commerce hosts the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at the Dean Center. Children will have the opportunity to do a coloring activity, spend time with the Easter Bunny and have their photo taken. Each session is one hour per group and photos will be download on your own. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Space is limited.

Bridge the Gap for Art

A special fundraiser concert has been scheduled for Sunday, April 7 from 3-6 p.m. at the William Monroe High School auditorium for retired Greene County Sheriff Scott Haas. The concert will include The Deanes, Tommy Wood and The Churchmen. Proceeds will help the family defray medical expenses. A meet and greet reception will be held on Tuesday, April 9 from 5-6 p.m. to introduce Mark Taylor as the new County Administrator. The reception will be held in the county meeting room at the County Administration Building prior to the regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting which begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

American Legion Post 128 hosts a fish fry on Friday, April 12 from 4:30-7 p.m. at 636 Madison Road, Stanardsville. Menu items will be prepared by Shawn Hayes of Blue Ridge Café and will include garden salad with ranch dressing, fried whiting with tartar sauce, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, country green beans, corn bread, dessert, iced tea, lemonade and coffee. Greene Farmers’ Market opens Saturday, April 13 at a temporary location in the county administration building parking lot, 40 Celt Road in Stanardsville.  The farmers’ market will be stationed in the parking lot until the new market pavilion under construction behind the county administration building is ready for use, expected in June.  The market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday morning, through the last weekend in October, featuring produce vendors, arts and crafts, occasional musical entertainment and other activities.

Fly an American Flag in memory of those who gave all in serving our country or in honor of those who serve and have served in our military. Flags will be displayed surrounding the Memorial Statue in front of the American Legion Post 128 building and fly on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day. American Legion Post 128 invites the Greene County community to join them on Memorial Day weekend to place American Flags on the graves of each veteran within the county. The group will provide a free American Flag to all families who have family graveyards on their property or small church cemeteries that have a Veteran buried there. The group will exchange the flag for a picture of the grave marker, the information from the grave marker and location of the graveyard/cemetery. Exchanges will occur on May 25 at the American Legion Post building starting at 9:30 a.m. The building is located at 636 Madison Road, Stanardsville.

On Monday, May 27, American Legion Post 128 will conduct its annual “Walk of Honor” Memorial Day ceremony at the Post building.
