Despite more than a dozen family and community members showing their support in Greene County Circuit Court last Tuesday for a Ruckersville man’s bond hearing, his bond appeal was denied.

Dustin Joseph Kramer, 25, appeared before Judge Dale Durrer on June 25. Kramer faces five counts of possession of child pornography, three counts of computer solicitation of a minor over the age of 15 and four counts of consensual sex with a minor over the age of 15.

Although more than a dozen showed up for the hearing, only Kramer’s mother testified. His mother said in court that the family was very active in their church, Covenant Church of God, and would like Kramer to come each Sunday.

Greene County Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Morgane Zander cited the use of internet and social media as reasons why Kramer should not be released on bond.

“[Kramer] admitted to having sex with a minor,” she said in court. “The defendant communicated with her through Instagram then Snapchat and met in person. On several occasions he had sexual contact, provided her with alcohol and took advantage of her.”

Mike Hallahan, Kramer’s attorney, argued that his client was not a threat to the community, citing the community support in the courtroom.

“This is a long-term relationship with one person. Nothing about this was not consensual. We don’t believe this is the type of thing that will happen again,” Hallahan said.

Zander, however, said the use of the internet to solicit a minor was the danger.

“He chose an electronic medium to seek this vulnerable girl out and continued to groom her over time,” Zander said. “That is a danger to the community - that’s the very definition of it. At the very least, he’s a danger to the victim.”

Judge Durrer sided with the Commonwealth on the matter, noting “concerns that these cases involve the internet, and internet access is 24/7.”
