Louis "Pete" Madden of Stanardsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home, The Harbor, on April 6, 2019. Known by many as Poppy, Pete is remembered for his honesty, generosity, sharp wit, and love for family and friends. Pete was born in 1926, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where he was raised by William and Hilda (Camp) Madden. He had two older brothers, Dick and Bob (now deceased), and a younger sister, Margaret, who resides in Beaver Falls. After graduating from Beaver Falls High School in 1944, he served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and returned home where he worked for J&L/LTV Steel Corporation for over thirty years. Pete married June Powell in 1950. Their daughter, Janice, was born in 1953 in Beaver Falls, where the family lived until 1975 when Janice married Bob Helmuth. Pete relocated to Stanardsville to be closer to his daughter, Jan, and her family a few years after June, his wife of 49 years, passed away. Pete spent many happy hours volunteering at Ruckersville Elementary School where he shared his love of reading with students. He also enjoyed reading stories for the Christian Broadcast Network and helping with activities at the JABA Senior Center. Pete was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. In 2004, he married Gloria Palmer of Ruckersville. Pete and Gloria lived together in Ruckersville until 2016, when failing health caused him to move to The Harbor, a memory care facility, in Stanardsville. Pete is survived by his wife, Gloria Palmer Madden; daughter, Jan Helmuth and son-in-law, Bob Helmuth; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Clara Palmer; son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Bernice Palmer; and daughter and son-in-law, Cherese and Bradley Kauffman. Pete is also survived by many grandchildren, Sherry Palmer, Kealani and Chris Schmitt, Eugene Lee and April Palmer, Wayne Palmer, Christine and Joe Romeu, Erin Helmuth, Crystal and Glen Griner, Lucas and Ikuko McCandless, Jon and Mandi Hines, and Nicole and Steve Campbell, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by brothers, Bob and Dick Madden; and daughter, Gloria "Bunny" Palmer. Friends and family are invited to gather for a celebration of Pete's life on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 5401 Watts Passage, Charlottesville, Va. Pastor Wendall Lamb will officiate.
