William Monroe High School boys soccer defeated George Wythe in the 3B regional quarterfinals last Thursday. Monroe beat Richmond City’s Wythe at home 4-1.
The teams were wellmatched in the first half with the only score coming in the 12th minute from Monroe’s Jackson Ward, a junior.
“I think we were a little sluggish at first, but overall we did well,” said head coach Matt Dunn.
The second half brought more action on the pitch with scores for Monroe from senior Carter Lamm, junior Jorge Sanchez-Ramirez and freshman Josh Binggeli.
Wythe, whose team members continued to sit or lay down on the field after each score, finally hit the boards with 1:54 left in the game.
Junior Evan Wagner was in goal for the Dragons.
“I think we did pretty good. At first, we tried sending a lot of through balls and we found out that wasn’t working so we did a lot of connecting passes to get the goals in,” Wagner said. “Our defense was strong; they always step up for me.”
The team was scheduled to face Manassas Park away in the Region 3B semifinals Tuesday after press time.
“I’d like to see our speed of play improve, especially when we face Manassas Park,” Dunn said.
The Dragons tied the Cougars in their first matchup and lost in their second.
