The year’s first student and employee of the month were honored at Monday’s Madison County School Board meeting.
Created last year, the initiatives honor those in the school community. Each month, an employee and a senior student are honored. For the latter, the students chosen throughout the year will attend a special dinner in May where they will each honor a teacher or employee of their choice.
For the month of August, Tyrone Banks was named the employee of the month. Banks is part of the custodial staff at Wetsel Middle School. Principal Donald Dodson described Banks is an integral part of the Wetsel team. Dodson said Banks is someone students adore and always has an upbeat attitude filling the halls with laughter. He said Banks came to him with a desire to attend college and will begin community college this fall. “He is willing to be a guiding light to students who only see secondary education as a dream,” Dodson said.
Meanwhile, Kaleigh Tyler was chosen as the student of the month. Tyler is involved in building trades and plans to attend a four-year college to continue her studies in the field. Principal Betty-Jo Wynham said Tyler is someone who is always willing to help. Tyler completed several projects around the school over the summer, including painting over parking spaces in the student lot that will later be customized by drivers. Wynham said Tyler is a committed learner and advocated for her fellow students during the previously held Listen and Learn sessions held at the school.
