For the first time in many years, Dr. Johanna Huijssoon has seen more cows and corn fields than cars on her commute to work. Huijssoon recently joined Dr. Oscar Vega at Madison Family Dentistry after more than 30 years of practicing in the Washington, D.C. area.
Huijssoon, who pronounces her name hoo-soon, and husband Terry made the decision to move to Greene County when he retired from his position at the state department.
“We both worked in DC for many years,” said Huijssoon. “My husband is a little older than me and when he retired, he said I want land, a dog and a house. We found that here in Central Virginia. For the past few years I’ve been keeping a place in DC and coming here on the weekends.”
Before settling in Washington D.C., Huijssoon traveled the globe. A native of the Netherlands, she spent time in Austria, Africa and the Middle East before coming to the United States in 1980 to attend school. She obtained her dental degree from Washington University of Dental Medicine in St. Louis then completed a general practice residency at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. She has worked as a dentist in Washington and as an assistant professor at the Northern Virginia Community College’s Dental Hygiene program from 1996-2011.
Huijssoon said travel and living in many different places helped make her more comfortable with the transition to life in the country.
“Obviously it is a big change moving from the city,” she said. “I have really gotten to enjoy the commute to work. In Washington you only see cars and pavement; it is long and stressful. Here the scenery is beautiful, you see fields and cows and the mountains.”
Huijssoon had been looking to move closer to her Greene County residence but was uncertain about joining a country practice.
“When I saw the clinic and how Dr. Vega worked, I knew it would be a good fit,” said Huijssoon. “We really hit it off. We have all the technology for modern dentistry. It is so important to keep up with current equipment. Even though Madison Family Dentistry is in a small town we have all the tools and technology of big city practices.”
Dr. Vega took over Madison Family Dentistry in 2015 from Dr. David DeViese. The popular dentist created the successful business by following his idea to provide accessible and affordable dental care to the people of Madison County. The practice serves a variety of patients, from children to geriatrics and performs a wide variety of services from cleaning to tooth repair. Vega has followed DeViese’s mantra that preventative care is better than repairing damage after the fact.
Dr. Huijssoon is excited to be working at Madison Family Dentistry. In March 2019 just before she started at Madison Family Dentistry, she was named a Washingtonian Magazine Top Dentist, an honor she has received several times.
“I really like general dentistry and he loves surgery, so we make a good team,” she said. “I’ve been really surprised and grateful that quite a few of my Washington patients have come here to see me as it’s such a long drive. I’m really excited to be a part of this practice and this community.”
