The body of a missing man has been recovered in Madison County.
On July 31, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office released a missing person report, stating that Gary Michael McDaniel, 35, was last seen the afternoon of July 28 near the Woodbrook subdivision. The office asked that anyone with information contact them.
The following day, deputies searched the Pratts, Aroda and Elly Road area with assistance from Virginia Department of Emergency Management and search and rescue teams as well as family and friends. According to police, the walking search was suspended several hours later after it had been confirmed that McDaniel was picked up by a person driving a small black truck.
However, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Sunday, a deceased male was located in the area of the Woodbrook subdivision. The family has confirmed the body was McDaniels, stating via social media posts that they were the ones to have found him.
“Prior to this discovery, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive search due to a missing person report involving local and state public safety agencies including several search and rescue K-9 teams and drones,” sheriff Erik Weaver said. “Additional public and private individuals, to include family and friends, participated in the search on Thursday, Aug. 1. During that search, information was provided from several independent sources that indicated the missing person had departed the area in a small, black, otherwise unidentified pick-up truck.”
Weaver said the matter will continue as an active investigation which will include examination by the Office of the Medical Examiner to provide a cause and time of death.
