The boy’s and girl’s cross country teams competed in two meets this past week and continue to compete well.
The teams travelled to Strasburg last Wednesday running against both Strasburg and Page County. In the girls event Madison County took the first four places. Kate McLearen won in 20:12, followed by Abby Patterson, Emma Kate Jenkins and Leah Henshaw. Mary Wingate completed the scoring for Madison in 10th. The girls team won with 20 points, followed by Strasburg with 25, and Page with 83.
Strasburg won the boys race winning with the low score of 23, Madison finished in second despite missing two of its usual top five scoring runners with 40 and Page in third with 63. The top Madison finisher was Mitchell Dyer in second place overall followed by Colby Messinger in sixth and Luke Beeler in ninth. A fast, flat course allowed for many runners to set personal records on the day.
On Saturday, the teams travelled to Mechanicsville and competed in the Milestat Invitational. This event was by far the largest event the Mountaineers have competed in this season. The event fielded various teams from all over the state. The girls team finished in an outstanding 10th place out of 55 teams represented. Medal winners and top finishers for Madison in the field of 305 runners were Abby Patterson in 13th and Kate McLearen in 15th. The boys team also ran well and finished 19th out of 68 represented teams. They were led on the day by Mitchell Dyer who was 29th out of 405 runners finishing the course with a 17:30. Eighth-grader Courtney Weakley continued her strong season and medaled in the JV girls race finishing 11th out of 68 runners.
Both teams will compete next in the Bull Run District Championship meet on Oct. 30 in New Market.
