Both the varsity girls’ and boys’ cross country teams were victorious last Wednesday at Rappahannock securing team wins over both Stonewall Jackson and Rappahannock.
The girls team led by sophomore Kate McLearen (2nd, 22:27) won with the low score of 23, Stonewall Jackson scoring 53 and Rappahannock scoring 56. Strong performances were also turned in by other top five scoring runners, Abby Patterson (third, 23:24), Emma Kate Jenkins (fifth, 24:23), Leah Henshaw (sixth, 24:36), and Mary Wingate (seventh, 24:57).
The boys team lead by overall winner junior Lucas Vailhe (first, 18:10), followed by Mitchell Dyer (second, 18:59), Colby Messinger (fifth, 20:01), Isaiah Batman (ninth, 20:28), and Luke Beeler (10th, 20:49). The boys team won with the low score of 27, with Stonewall Jackson scoring 37 and Rappahannock 63.
Both varsity teams also competed this past Saturday at the Stonewall Jackson Invitational in New Market.
The girls team finished third overall out of eight teams securing a team trophy in the Grey Division with a total of 93 points. Kate McLearen (fourth), Leah Henshaw (ninth), and Emma Kate Jenkins (13th) were all medal winners and in the Top 15 of the field of 69 runners in the Grey Division. Mary Wingate and Grace McCain rounded out the top scoring five.
The boys team competed well in the field of 11 teams of the Grey Division despite missing a couple of their top runners. Mitchell Dyer claimed a top 15 medal spot, finishing seventh overall out of 91 Grey Division Runners. Colby Messinger, Isaiah Batman, Luke Beeler, and Edgar Teo-Abrego were the top scoring five runners for Madison.
Runners who competed in the Developmental race that received Top 15 medals were eighth-graders Courtney Weakley and Annie Herrman and Freshman Wesley Wood.
The cross country teams are scheduled to compete in their last home meet of the season Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Hoover Ridge at 5 p.m.
